Orthodontic Treatments

Types of braces

If you need braces, you will have options. Which type is right for you depends on what problems are being corrected and what you need to be comfortable during treatment.

01

Traditional Metal Braces

The most common type of braces, and what most people picture when thinking of braces. They have greatly improved over designs of the past, using better, lighter materials and offering a smaller profile. You can opt to personalize them with colors and fun brackets.

02

Self-Ligating Braces

Traditional metal braces made better. They self-ligate, which means there is no need for elastics to hold the archwire in place, making them less visible. They somewhat adjust themselves, so fewer appointments are needed, and they place less friction on the teeth.

03

Ceramic Braces

Self-ligating braces with brackets made from ceramic instead of metal alone. The ceramic is tooth-colored, allowing them to blend in with the teeth. They do stain easily, so they need greater care, and their delicate nature means they are not for everyone.

04

Clear Aligners

Acrylic trays that place force on the teeth through their shape. They are invisible, removable, and comfortable. Many patients prefer these because they do not change their look and they require fewer accommodations than braces do.

To find out which options are right for you, schedule your appointment.

Beyond braces

More ways we straighten smiles

Orthodontic treatment can involve several approaches: appliances, tooth extractions, and surgery. The vast majority of patients we treat only need appliances, which place gentle pressure on the teeth in a carefully controlled way, steadily moving them into their proper positions.

Treatment time varies — some minor alignment problems can be corrected in about six months, while severe problems that require both surgery and appliances can take up to three years. The biggest way to shorten treatment is following our instructions exactly.

Dental Monitoring

The first suite of AI-powered solutions for dental professionals — fewer in-office visits while getting great results from the comfort of your home.

Orthognathic surgery is used when a patient presents with a severe orthodontic abnormality and does not have enough growing left to do to allow for correction with appliances alone. Thanks to advancements in the field, many seemingly severe issues can now be corrected with appliances alone — but the older a patient is, the more likely it is that significant problems will need surgery. It can only take place once the patient has stopped growing, around age 16 in females and age 18 in males.

Once you have healed, your bite is perfected using appliances for six to 12 months, followed by a retainer to maintain your results.

Titanium anchors used to reserve space or facilitate faster tooth movement. They can be used with braces and in some cases can eliminate the need for headgear. After a strong anesthetic numbs the area, the TAD is fixed firmly into the jaw bone in a very quick procedure.

Clean TADs the same way you clean your teeth — brush them and floss around them as needed — and use the antimicrobial mouthwash we give you twice a day.

It’s fast. A hands-free device you only wear for 20 minutes a day. SoftPulse Technology delivers precisely calibrated micropulses to encourage faster tooth movement.

It’s gentle. Compared to just chewing food, it is 200 times more gentle.

It’s clinically proven. Proven safe and effective in U.S. clinical trials, approved by the FDA in 2009, and available by prescription.

There is more to orthodontics than braces:

  • Elastics — rubber bands that improve the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.
  • Forsus™ — an alternative to headgear that promotes strategic growth in teens, possibly helping avoid surgery.
  • Headgear — treats overbites and underbites by controlling the growth of the jaws.
  • Herbst® Appliance — treats overbite in children who still have significant growth left.
  • Positioners — finalize tooth movements, usually worn for about two months after braces.
  • Retainers — fixed or removable; they hold the teeth in their corrected positions.
  • Separators or Spacers — little rubber doughnuts that push teeth apart so other appliances can be placed.
  • Twin Block Appliance — two pieces that work together to create better jaw positioning.

Palatal expanders widen the upper jaw by placing gentle pressure on the upper molars, increasing with each adjustment. Patients adjust expanders themselves after light training in our office.

  1. In a well-lit area, tip the patient’s head back.
  2. Place the key in the hole until it is firmly in place.
  3. Push the key toward the back of the mouth. The fender will rotate and the new hole will appear. The rotation stops when the key meets the back of the expander.
  4. Press back and down toward the tongue to remove the key. The next hole for insertion of the key should now be visible.

Once your braces come off, treatment is not over. To keep your teeth in their corrected positions, you will need to wear retainers full-time for at least two years. After that, most people will still need to wear them at night several nights a week for life.

  • Traditional removable — a metal wire around the front teeth attached to an acrylic arch. Easier to brush and floss, but can be visible.
  • Aligner-style — look like Invisalign aligners; not visible and removable, but not as effective as wire retainers.
  • Fixed — bonded to the backs of the teeth. They cannot be lost and are highly effective, but brushing and flossing is harder.

Invisalign® & Invisalign Teen®

Straighter teeth, hardly noticeable

If the looks and lifestyle changes involved with braces bother you, we have a solution: Invisalign. It uses a series of clear, removable aligners that move the teeth because of the way each aligner is shaped. As you switch aligners, the pressure changes, directing the tooth movement. Within about 12–18 months, the teeth reach their final positions.

Benefits

  • Finishes faster than traditional braces
  • Remove them to eat, drink, brush and floss
  • A custom fit for incredible comfort
  • Clear plastic — invisible when worn
  • Office visits about once every two months

The process

It starts with your consultation, where we take diagnostics and determine if Invisalign is right for you. A digital scanner creates a 3D model of your dental anatomy, and the Invisalign software maps the steps from start to finish — those steps are the aligners. Dr. Oliveira reviews the plan, then sends it off so the aligners are made. Every two weeks, you change out aligners; once you wear them all, you move into the retention phase.

Invisalign Teen®

The original Invisalign system is designed with adults in mind, so teens use Invisalign Teen. Everything else is the same, plus: a treatment plan that keeps growth in mind, blue indicator dots to show if the aligners are being worn enough, and free replacement aligners.

Teens must be ready to commit — if a patient worries they’ll be too forgetful, traditional braces are the better choice.

Invisalign® costs

We can’t know the cost until we know how many aligners you need — but by the end of your first visit, we can tell you exactly what Invisalign will be for you.

Payment options include maximizing insurance benefits, discounts for paying in full with cash or check, most major credit cards, and flexible financing.

For New Patients

Every smile starts with an initial consultation

Our greatest goal is to give you the healthy, straight, beautiful smile that you’ve always wanted. Your initial consultation gives you the chance to meet our team, learn more about orthodontics, receive a complete initial exam, and find out which treatment options will best meet your needs. We will:

  • Review your dental and medical history forms
  • Provide a complete oral exam, with X-rays, to determine whether treatment is necessary
  • Help you create a customized treatment plan
  • Discuss all financial information, insurance options, and payment plans

After your consultation, we’ll schedule your first appointment and your doctor will place your new orthodontic appliance — generally about an hour. Visiting about every four to eight weeks is an important part of treatment, and if “life happens,” just let us know and we’ll do everything we can to accommodate you.

It’s very important to continue visiting your family dentist every six months during treatment. If extra dental care is needed, we’ll coordinate with your dentist.

Submit forms online ahead of your appointment, or bring them with you.

Financial information

The cost of your orthodontic treatment varies depending on your individual needs and treatment plan. We’ll discuss the cost and each available payment plan so you know what to expect before beginning treatment. Our practice accepts most major credit cards and insurance plans, and our staff will help with insurance claims and paperwork.

Our secure online patient service lets you view appointment and account information any time, sign up for email or text reminders, check payment history and current charges, and print flex spending reimbursement and tax receipts.

  • Having dental insurance doesn’t mean you have orthodontic coverage — ask if your plan covers both, and whether coverage is for adults and children or just children.
  • Orthodontic coverage typically has a Lifetime Maximum Benefit that pays 50% of the total case fee. If your benefit is $3,000, braces would have to cost $6,000 to use it all.
  • Benefits pay out over the course of treatment rather than in one lump sum — keep your plan for the whole treatment.
  • Ask whether your plan has a waiting period for braces — some wait as long as two years.
  • Dual coverage is usually possible; the “birthday rule” generally decides which plan is primary.
  • If you gain coverage after treatment has started, ask whether the plan covers work in progress.

Questions about your plan? Call and ask for our Insurance Coordinator. Benefit quotes are estimates, not a guarantee of services or payments.

Three smiling children with backpacks

Orthodontics for every age

All children should see an orthodontist on or around their seventh birthday, when they have enough permanent teeth to establish clear bite relationships. If there are significant issues, early treatment can help avoid surgery; if not, we’ll ask the child to return around age 12.

Signs a child may need treatment:

  • Losing baby teeth earlier or later than peers
  • Struggles with chewing or biting down
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Thumb sucking, especially after age five
  • Speech problems
  • Protruding teeth
  • Jaws that cannot fully close, or that shift when opening and closing

Teens make up the majority of orthodontic patients — they still have some growing to do, their teeth and gums are almost always healthy, and their peers are also in treatment, so it feels normal. We offer numerous types of braces so they can find the one that works best for them.

About a fifth of all orthodontic patients in the U.S. are over the age of 21. Because adults are often hesitant to wear traditional braces, we offer multiple options that are more professional and aesthetically pleasing. Tooth loss and gum disease can complicate adult treatment, but we can still work with patients who have these problems.

Wearing Braces

Life with braces

Once you have your braces, your life is going to change. In the long term, that means a healthier, more attractive smile. In the short term, it’s all about adjusting.

Avoid:

  • Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
  • Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, ice
  • Sticky foods — caramel candies, chewing gum
  • Hard foods — nuts, hard candies
  • Foods you bite into — corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Go ahead and enjoy:

  • Dairy — soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks
  • Breads — soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
  • Grains — pasta, soft cooked rice
  • Meats/poultry — soft cooked chicken, meatballs, lunch meats
  • Seafood — tuna, salmon, crab cakes
  • Vegetables — mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, beans
  • Fruits — applesauce, bananas, fruit juice
  • Treats — ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, soft cake

Genuine pain should not result from braces, but soreness and irritation can. Teeth can be sore when braces are first placed (around five days) and after each adjustment (usually gone within 24 hours). Mouth irritation usually occurs in the first week or so. Use salt-water rinses and over-the-counter pain medication, and cover any irritating part with dental wax.

Your teeth will also feel a little loose — don’t panic. For teeth to move, they have to loosen up. We promise, your teeth are not going to fall out.

With braces there are more spots for food and bacteria to hide. Brush after every meal and floss at least twice a day.

Brushing: use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste for two minutes. Angle the brush 45 degrees to the gum line with small circular motions on outside and inside surfaces; use back-and-forth strokes on chewing surfaces.

Flossing: floss at least twice a day (after every meal is best). A floss threader makes it easier — get beneath the gum line. If that’s too complicated, invest in a water pick.

Genuine orthodontic emergencies are unusual and are usually due to injury — go to an emergency room first, then contact us. Most “emergencies” are small mishaps we can fix in the office, or sometimes at home:

  • Headgear discomfort — usually from not wearing it as instructed; the more you wear it, the less it hurts. If no better after a week, schedule an appointment.
  • Braces discomfort — goes away with time. Use dental wax for rubbing; salt-water rinses for tender teeth.
  • Loose parts — call us; we’ll fix it within a couple of days. Cover poking wires with wax, secure loose brackets with wax, save any piece that comes off, and use tweezers to reseat a loose wire (or clip it if it can’t be).

If you’re ever unsure what to do, call (774) 678-0569.

Orthodontic FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Orthodontics (also referred to as dentofacial orthopedics) is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities.

A dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Your orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile.

Any age can be a great age. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit around age seven; however, treatment is not exclusive to children and teens — about one in every five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21.

  • Brush after every meal and floss at least once a day, using fluoride toothpaste.
  • If you take out your retainer to eat, brush and floss, and keep it safe in its container.
  • Clean your retainer by brushing it gently; you may soak it in denture cleaner as instructed. Never use boiling water or the dishwasher.
  • Avoid sugary foods, sticky and chewy foods (caramel, gum, gummy bears), hard foods (hard candy, nuts, ice) and anything that can get stuck (corn on the cob, soft bagels, ribs, taffy).
  • Keep seeing your family dentist every six months.

Braces help you improve the look and feel of your smile. Options include clear, ceramic, lingual, self-ligating, invisible and traditional metal braces.

Every smile responds differently. Treatment can take anywhere between six and 30 months, but most standard treatments take about 22 months.

Braces do not often hurt, though you may feel a small amount of discomfort for a couple of days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth get used to them.

Yes — brush at least three times a day and floss daily to reach between your braces. Your orthodontist can show you how once your braces are placed.

Yes! It’s even more important. Food can be caught where your toothbrush can’t reach, causing bacteria buildup that can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with us to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment at first, but braces won’t stop you from any school activity. If you play a contact sport, wear a mouthguard to protect your braces.

Simply call our practice at (774) 678-0569. If you’re a new patient or have been referred, let us know and we’ll provide everything you need.

About Us

Meet Dr. Kevin Oliveira

Dr. Kevin Oliveira, orthodontist

“As an orthodontist, I have the best job on earth. Orthodontists have been given the gift to change people’s lives for the better. There is nothing more satisfying, to me, than getting to meet patients with various clinical issues and watching them change and gain confidence throughout treatment.”

When I meet a new patient, I know that they are coming to me from a unique background and that, during the course of orthodontia, we will get to know each other and become friends. Meeting and getting to know patients and their families has provided wonderful friendships that continue outside the office, and for that I am thankful. I love our conversations, and every day I learn something new during these exchanges, as I help improve their oral health.
